Description

Paperback with printed publisher's cover. One quarto volume (282x230 mm), (6)-239-(1) pages and 10 plates. First edition. Study of the planet Mars based on the results obtained with the large telescope of the Meudon Observatory and with an analytical presentation of all the work carried out on this planet since 1659. An astronomer of Greek origin, Eugène Antoniadi (1870-1944) was one of the great specialists on the planet Mars. He was deputy director of the observatory created by Camille Flammarion at Juvisy-sur-Orge. Antoniadi dedicates a chapter in particular to the illusion of the Martian canals, the non-existence of which he provided evidence for. His Martian cartography would remain in use until the space age.
